Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy For Gardeners West Hampstead
Gardeners West Hampstead is committed to maintaining high standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, clients, contractors and members of the public. This policy explains how we manage health and safety risks while delivering gardening and grounds maintenance services in residential and commercial settings.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health arising from our work activities. We will provide safe systems of work, appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision, and take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure a safe working environment. Health and safety is an integral part of our day to day operations and decision making.
Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners West Hampstead has overall responsibility for implementing and reviewing this Health and Safety Policy. Management will:
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out and kept up to date for all key gardening activities, provide and maintain safe equipment and tools, supply suitable personal protective equipment, ensure employees receive appropriate training and supervision, and monitor compliance with health and safety procedures.
All employees, whether full time, part time or temporary, are responsible for:
Taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions, following all safety instructions, training and agreed procedures, and promptly reporting accidents, incidents, near misses or unsafe conditions to management.
Risk Assessment And Safe Systems Of Work
We conduct risk assessments for our gardening services, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work within our competence, planting, use of machinery, handling of green waste and the use of garden chemicals where applicable. These risk assessments identify significant hazards and specify control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work are developed from these risk assessments and communicated to staff through training, written procedures and site specific briefings. Employees are required to follow these systems at all times and report any concerns or suggested improvements.
Training, Competence And Supervision
Gardeners West Hampstead will ensure that staff are competent to carry out the tasks expected of them. This includes:
Induction training on general health and safety, manual handling, safe use of tools and machinery, awareness of site specific hazards, and correct use of personal protective equipment. Additional task specific training is provided where required, particularly for powered machinery and any higher risk activity.
New or inexperienced employees will be supervised until they have demonstrated the necessary competence. Ongoing refresher training and toolbox talks are used to reinforce safe working practices.
Tools, Machinery And Equipment
All gardening tools, machinery and equipment used by Gardeners West Hampstead will be maintained in a safe condition. Regular inspections and servicing will be carried out in line with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements where applicable.
Employees must carry out pre use checks, report defects immediately and remove faulty equipment from use until it has been repaired or replaced. Only authorised and trained personnel may operate powered machinery.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection will be provided where risk assessment identifies a need. Employees must use the equipment provided correctly, look after it, and report any damage or loss so that replacement items can be issued.
Manual Handling And Ergonomics
Gardening work frequently involves lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. Manual handling tasks will be assessed and, where possible, mechanical aids or alternative methods will be used to reduce the risk of injury. Staff are trained in safe lifting techniques, good posture and ways to minimise strain, particularly when handling soil, plants, paving materials and equipment.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Hazards
When using garden chemicals or other substances, Gardeners West Hampstead will follow relevant safety data information and carry out assessments to identify control measures. Only trained staff are permitted to handle such products. Storage, mixing, application and disposal will be undertaken in a way that protects people, wildlife and the environment.
We aim to use safe methods and products wherever reasonably practicable and will consider alternatives that reduce risks to health and safety.
Noise, Vibration And Weather Conditions
Gardening equipment can generate noise and vibration. Where appropriate, hearing protection and other controls will be used to minimise exposure. Work patterns may be adjusted to manage vibration risks when operating powered tools.
Outdoor work is affected by weather conditions. Supervisors will assess conditions such as high winds, heavy rain, extreme temperatures or poor visibility and may postpone or modify activities where necessary to protect staff and others.
Housekeeping And Public Safety
We recognise our duty to safeguard clients, neighbours and passers by while gardening work is in progress. Work areas will be organised to minimise trip hazards, with tools and materials stored safely. Cords, hoses and equipment will be positioned to reduce risk, and barriers or warning signs may be used where appropriate.
Debris, clippings and waste materials will be cleared promptly. Access routes, driveways and pathways will be kept as safe and unobstructed as reasonably practicable during and after the work.
Accidents, Incidents And First Aid
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. Details will be recorded and investigated so that causes can be identified and corrective action taken to prevent recurrence.
First aid provisions are made available to staff on site. Employees are informed how to obtain first aid assistance and how to respond in the event of an emergency involving themselves, colleagues, clients or the public.
Consultation And Continuous Improvement
Gardeners West Hampstead encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in developing safer working practices.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and revised as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry practice, our services or the nature of the sites we maintain. Our goal is continual improvement in health and safety performance throughout all gardening and maintenance activities.
